Tamil Nadu Health Department Bolsters Hospital Security Following Doctor Attack

In response to the recent tragic incident in West Bengal, where a female doctor was brutally assaulted and murdered, the Tamil Nadu Health Department has implemented stringent security measures to protect the healthcare professionals and patients within the state's hospitals.

A department circular outlines a series of protocols aimed at enhancing security and preventing similar incidents from occurring. One key measure is the establishment of dedicated police booths within all hospitals. These outposts will serve as a visible deterrent to potential criminals and provide a more immediate response to any emergencies.

In addition, the department has mandated the installation of CCTV cameras throughout hospital premises. This surveillance system will not only act as a deterrent but also provide valuable evidence in case of any incidents. To further regulate access and ensure patient safety, hospitals will now restrict visitor hours. Only individuals with valid identification will be allowed to enter the hospital during designated visiting times.

To improve the overall security environment, hospitals are also being instructed to enhance their lighting infrastructure. Adequate lighting is crucial for deterring criminal activity and ensuring the safety of patients and staff.

Furthermore, the department has emphasised protecting medical professionals from violence and harassment. Banners will be prominently displayed in hospitals, clearly stating that any assault or violence against healthcare personnel will result in legal action under the Medical Professionals Act.

The implementation of these comprehensive security measures demonstrates the Tamil Nadu government's unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of healthcare professionals and patients within the state's hospitals. By taking proactive steps to enhance security, the government aims to create a safer and more conducive environment for healthcare delivery.
