In the Chennai Municipal Corporation area, independent houses that fail to sort waste properly will face a fine of Rs. 1,000, while apartments will incur a fine of Rs. 5,000. If litter is disposed of in public places, a fine of Rs. 5,000 will be applied; if waste is thrown into water bodies, the fine will also be Rs. 5,000. Businesses that do not sort waste properly will be fined Rs. 5,000. Shops without waste bins will face a penalty of Rs. 1,000. After public events,those who do not clear waste will be fined Rs. 5,000. This penalty system will come into effect immediately, according to the municipal administration.

  • Businesses : Businesses that neglect proper waste segregation will be fined ₹5,000 (around $60 USD). Shops lacking designated waste bins will face a ₹1,000 (around $12 USD) penalty.
  • Events : Organizers of events who fail to ensure proper waste disposal after the event will be slapped with a ₹5,000 (around $60 USD) fine.

These hefty fines are intended to deter improper waste disposal and encourage responsible waste management practices throughout Chennai. The new regulations are effective immediately.
